Red 2 (2013)

Let me start off by saying “Red 2 is one of the more enjoyable films of the Summer”. Sure it’s a “bold” statement, but there have been many let downs moviewise, this Summer. Be it an action flick or a comedy, not many films this year have delivered an overall great experience (excluding Fast and Furious 6 and World War Z). Until, Red 2, that is.

Red 2 sort of picks up where Red left off. For those of you unaware of the events that transpired in Red, Ex-CIA agents Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) and Marvin Boggs (John Malkovich) successfully cleared their names in a coverup with the help of Frank’s girlfriend, Sarah (Mary-Louise Parker), and MI6 agent Victoria Winters (Helen Mirren). Now, Frank and Sarah are trying to live a normal life (ie. shopping at Costco), when Marvin finds them to inform Frank that he and himself are now being hunted by Interpol. Why? A WikiLeaks upload blames Frank and Marvin for participating in a Cold War cover up, involving a secret Nuclear Missile that was smuggled into Russia, with the help of crazy Dr. Edward Bailey (Anthony Hopkins).

What worked for Red, was its incredible and unusual cast that worked terrifically together. Just picturing the thought of Helen Mirren using a gattling gun to kill people is enough to want you to see this film. Then, add the amazing John Malkovich into the mix, as an odd, paranoid CIA Agent who always carries around a huge gun, and Bruce Willis who is an action hero legend. In Red 2, we get Anthony Hopkins, who plays a fantastic mentally unstable scientist. Whether it was talking to himself, or going off on tangents about things he created, he really nails the whole “crazy scientist” role well. Also, adding to this great cast is Byung Hun Lee, who is known for his awesome action scenes in G.I. Joe. His fighting sequences are unlike anything you’ve seen before and will have you wanting to learn some form about martial arts.

Before I go too into detail about this movie, I’d like to acknowledge the fact that critics are tearing this movie apart. My biggest complaint about that is the fact that some of these critics are looking way too deep into this movie. It has many flaws, sure. But is that a terrible thing? For the most part, this movie is entertaining on all fronts and achieves what it set out to do. This cast is what makes the film so enjoyable and I don’t see that as a bad thing. If you’re smart and dispel the naysayers, you’ll get to watch a very entertaining movie! The cast makes it so, and in turn, you get to have a great experience at the movies. Isn’t that what you, the audience, are paying for? Sorry to go off on that little tangent there, but I don’t want other critics to discourage you from seeing this film! With that being said, here are my Top Ten Thoughts on Red 2!

Helen Mirren going to work. In this case, work means killing people out both windows of a drifting care. What more could one ask for?

What I Enjoyed

What I Didn’t Enjoy

This movie is simply awesome.

The plot is kind of weak, but the characters make it believable enough.

The cast of this film works so well together and will have you laughing and smiling all throughout.

Catherine Zeta-Jones didn’t do wonders for me. She was fine, but she doesn’t hold her own against the other all-star cast members.

John Malkovich and his looks/actions are enough to make you want to see this film. He;s incredible.

There weren’t enough ninja sequences with Byung Hun Lee. He totally rocks in this movie and I just wish that he got to do cool fighting tricks more often.

Byung Hun Lee has one of the coolest scenes I’ve seen in the movie, involving a gas station freezer door.

The plot gets a bit formulaic at times, but not the point where you’re relating to other movies as you watch the film.

Anthony Hopkins plays a fantastic insane patient. His multiple personalities and quirky ways are convincing and hilarious.

Anthony Hopkins was almost Hannibal Lecter-like in this movie. If he would have done something from Silence of the Lambs, that would have been awesome.

Dame Helen Mirren kicks major ass and kills a lot of people. Just picture that. Sweet, little old Helen Mirren shooting up a place with an automatic weapon.

John Malkovich is hilarious in this movie, but he seems to have a little bit less of a part in this film, compared to the first one.

Mary-Louise Parker kind of steals the show with her eagerness to be a secret agent. She’s lovable and hilarious!

The ending is totally cliche and predictable, but I don’t care. It was still awesome.

Bruce Willis isn’t in a crappy Die Hard movie! He’s back to being a badass and killing people in creative ways. What more could you want?

Red didn’t necessarily need a sequel, but I’m not complaining now that I’ve seen this movie!

This film has some of the coolest action sequences I’ve seen in a movie this year. Some will really blow your mind.

I wish Helen Mirren would have killed more people. Her smile and attitude while killing is fantastic and I wanted a bit more of that!

If you couldn’t tell, the cast in this movie is amazing. They all have unique characteristics that only strengthen the movie. They’re a very enjoyable lot that will have you laughing and “wowing” all throughout the movie.

You can pick this movie apart for little, insignificant details, but that would be foolish. This incredible cast makes this movie one of the Summer’s better action and comedy movies!

Red 2 is one of the more enjoyable films of the year, thanks to its incredible cast that will never cease to amuse you! The cast works incredibly well together and their interactions and dialog will have you laughing and cheering along the way. By no means is this a perfect movie. It has its flaws and cliches, but it’s so much fun to watch! Isn’t that the point of going to see a movie? You got to be entertained and Red 2 does just that! Look no further if you want a fun action/comedy flick that will surprise and entertain you in all senses of the word!
