Brace yourselves for what is shaping up to be one of the best films of 2013. Steve McQueen is known for providing amazing stories with amazing actors to tell them and 12 Years A Slave could be his masterpiece. The film is based off of the true story of Solomon Northup, a freeman who was tricked and sold into slavery. He was taken from his family and forced to work on a plantation while his family wondered where he was. Northup, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, spent 12 years as a slave and we will be shown the “best” of times and the absolute worst of times of his experience.
McQueen is not one to hold back, so expect a lot of language and a lot of gruesome scenes. McQueen is an African American Director with an Afircan American lead in a story about the struggles of an African American. The reason that I bring all this up is because this could be the year that all three could be nominated and could even win (after all the high praise from film festivals, this is a possibility). With a supporting cast including Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Paul Giamatti, Paul Dano and Benedict Cumberbatch, this film has Oscar potential written all over it. At the end of the day, however, I think this film’s incredible story and lead performance by Ejiofor could take it all the way. Please watch this powerful trailer and make it a point to go see this film!
This film will be released October 18, 2013 and is Rated R violence/cruelty, some nudity and brief sexuality.
